In 2007 Bishop Pfeifer called numerous community representatives to meet and discuss how to address the substance abuse problem in our community. From this initial gathering a Core Committee and a Core sub-committee were established and began meeting to create a vision and outline goals and specific tasks for the group.
The coalition's goals are:
- To influence and promote positive community norms that strengthen family, spiritual, and moral values
- To increase awareness and educate the public about substance abuse issues in the community
- To identify individual, family, school, peer, community and environmental Risk and Protective Factors within our community
- To identify and include crucial community elements and components such as existing prevention and education programs, treatment programs, criminal justice agencies, the business community, employers, churches, schools – both public and private, civic organizations, private individuals, the media and social services agencies
