Concho Valley CARES & Pizza Hut Encourages Families to Celebrate Family DayTM

The CARES Coalition, in partnership with Pizza Hut, encourages Concho Valley families to celebrate Family Day - A Day to Eat Dinner with Your Children™ on Monday, September 27, 2010.

Family Day - A Day to Eat Dinner with Your ChildrenTM is a national movement launched by The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University in 2001 that promotes the parental engagement fostered during frequent family dinners as a simple, effective way to prevent substance abuse in kids and stay connected.  Studies also show teens continue to report that parents-not their peers or the media-have the biggest influence on their decision to stay drug-free.

Bishop Michael Pfeifer, founder of the CARES Coalition, explains, "Dinner time is the perfect time to connect with your kids on a daily basis. Through the reflective prayers said during grace plus the array of favorite meals served and the loads of laughs shared about the day's events, you can help continually feed your child's mind, body and soul."

The CARES Coalition reminds families to turn off the TV and gather around the dinner table, picnic blanket, or park bench to eat and talk together in recognition of this national event.

Pizza Hut, San Angelo locations only, are offering their Family Meal Deal - which includes 2 medium pizzas w/ 3 toppings or specialty, 4 drinks or 2 liter and large breadsticks - for $19.99; a $20 discount!  When ordering, simply say, "CARES sent me for Family DayTM."

CARES is also outreaching to several outlying counties, within the Concho Valley, by offering them a Family DayTM Starter Kit with tips on how to celebrate the event.

CASA offers many resources including conversation starters and great tips you can use on your Family Day at http://www.casafamilyday.org/.  For local resources and information, contact E. Angelina Osornio at angelinao@adaccv.org or call 325-224-3481.

National Night Out Against Crime

On Tuesday, October, 2010, neighborhoods throughout San Angelo are being invited to join forces with other communities throughout Texas for the "27th Annual National Night Out" (NNO) crime and drug prevention event.  National Night Out, which is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) and co-sponsored locally by the San Angelo Police Department, will involve over 11,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world.  In all, over 35 million people are expected to participate in ‘America's Night Out against Crime'.

National Night Out is designed to: (1) Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; (2) Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime efforts; (3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and (4) Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Many neighborhoods will be hosting a variety of events such as block parties, cookouts, carnivals, flashlight walks, youth activities, and anticrime rallies.  Locations and their contacts are as follows:

Community organizations are invited to have booths at as many locations as possible.  If interested, please contact the site coordinators listed above.
