Substance abuse is particularly damaging to one of our most valuable resources, our children, and is a contributing factor in the three leading causes of death for teenagers - accidents, homicides, and suicides.
The Concho Valley C.A.R.E.S. (Community Action & Resources for Empowerment and Success) Coalition and the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council for the Concho Valley (ADACCV) value the health and safety of all our citizens. Community involvement is a proven strategy in preventing and combating substance abuse in youth, and in turn adults. It was the belief of Enrique "Kiki" Camarena; a DEA agent murdered in the line of duty, that one person CAN make a difference.
In 1988 the Red Ribbon Campaign was established by Congress to promote this belief and encourage a drug-free lifestyle and involvement in drug prevention efforts by the entire community. The Red Ribbon Week campaign is celebrated annually the last week of October, which is October 25-31, 2010.

CV CARES and ADACCV Recognize Red Ribbon Week with Community-wide Wear Red Day & Dress Your Campus in Red Contest
The red ribbon serves as a symbol of intolerance for substance use and abuse. And while drug use and abuse has devastating consequences, this year we will be honoring Kiki Camarena and local youths' decisions to be drug free with our Hand in Hand - We Take a Stand celebration. We are asking for community support and encouragement of youths' decisions to be drug-free by participating in Community-wide Wear Red Day which takes place on Wednesday, October 27th. The following local restaurants will be offering discounts to patrons wearing red:
- Pizza Hut - 15% Discount on All Menu Item; All Day!
- Fuentes Café - 10% Discount on Meal; All Day!
- Los Panchitos - 5% Discount on Meal; All Day!
- McAlister's Deli - Free Iced Tea; All Day!
- D-Ray's - Free Ice Cream with Purchase of Meal; All Day!
Also taking place on Wednesday, October 27th is our annual Dress Your Campus in Red Contest. School campuses will be judged based on their efforts to "dress" their campus in red and their use of drug-free messages. This year, 18 campuses are participating. On the elementary level, they are competing for a movie day and the middle and high school level is competing for a DJ for an event of their choosing (i.e. spring dance or prom).
